Introducing The Black Scholarship + The Black Stories Reading Challenge

Updated: Oct 14, 2020

Hello friends! Thanks for considering donating to my fundraiser. I had been brainstorming ways to use my platform to give back, and I’m happy that I’ve found two ways to do so:

The Black Scholarship will be for any Black identifying undergraduate or graduate students needing financial support. Applicants simply need to demonstrate that they are enrolled in an institution of higher education (i.e. submitting proof of enrollment, transcript, etc.) and submit a Statement of Need to be considered. This scholarship will not be based on my idea of who can write the best essay or has the highest GPA. Acknowledging that higher education is an accomplishment in and of itself, I want these funds to be accessible to anyone who needs them, to be used as they see fit. I will not be telling students how to use the funds disbursed to them. It is important to acknowledge that college comes with numerous expenses beyond just tuition, fees, and books. These funds can be used for rent, food, clothes, travel, or anything the student needs. My goal is to raise $5,000 to be split evenly between 5 different students. Scholarship recipients will be chosen at random.

The Black Stories Reading Challenge is open to children of color 12 years old and younger. Children will be able to apply to this challenge and will be selected on a rolling basis as funds become available until I have awarded 20 prizes. When children are selected, they will have 1 month to select an age appropriate book featuring a Black main character or written by a Black author and write a book report based on prompts that I provide. Once the book report is submitted and I’ve confirmed that they answered all the prompts, they will be awarded $50. The goal of this reading challenge is 3-fold:

  • To get children to diversify their bookshelves

  • To encourage children to read for fun & for retention/comprehension

  • To support and uplift Black stories and authors

My goal is to raise $6,000 with this campaign by August 2020. If I am not able to raise the full amount or I exceed my goal, I will use 83% of the proceeds toward the scholarship and 17% of the proceeds toward the reading challenge. I would greatly appreciate it if you could share this fundraiser and any donation you can spare. Thank you for considering!
